The "Parish Locator" will help you find a local parish church where your relatives may have been christened, married or buried. Follow the list below to use the Genuki Church Database.

  1. You will see the "Search the database" heading on the left of the screen. Enter the information asked for in the fields provided as follows - starting at the left.
  2. Type a place name or Ordnance Survey grid reference in the first entry box.
  3. Click on the drop down arrow to the right of the next box to reveal a list of counties and click on the one you want.
  4. Click the drop down arrow to the right of the next box and click on one of the two options given -
    Options are - (1) Show list ordered by distance (2) Show churches plotted on a map.
  5. When you are satisfied with your entries click the "Search Button" on the right.
  6. The page now appearing tells you the number of places found, matching the place name or grid reference previously specified.
  7. Click on the drop down arrow to the right of the menu box displayed and click on one of the options, of places listed that you want to follow.
  8. Now click on the "Select Place" button
  9. Depending on your initial choice you will now see a map, or a list of churches (each with a unique link to its own information page).
  10. The map shows churches as square numbered boxes in the defined area of your search. A label appears, which identifies each church as you place your mouse cursor on the numbered boxes.
  11. Maps produced can be clicked and dragged to reveal the other churches of your search, which may not appear in the initial screen shot.
  12. Other search options appear above the list of churches from your initial search. You can choose to change the "distance", "year", "denomination" and add a "graveyard" option from a drop down list. For example - 10 miles or kilometers, 1868, graveyards - option "yes".
  13. This will help you decide which churches to include in your searches for the records of your relatives. It is important to note that this list does not cover all churches and more are being added to the database. Ask the local library if there are any more records and where these are held.
