When searching for a birth, marriage or death in the "GRO Index", and you have found an entry in the year and quarter you have searched, you will come across - next to the entry - letters and numbers, such as Darlington 10a 257; these refer to the district in which the event took place. Darlington is the town and 10a is the registration district of County Durham; (10a 257 also refer to the volume and page number where the entry is kept in the General Records Office Index). Always record this information to save you searching for this information again. If you are not sure which register office you need, just try any in the county and ask them which office covers your town.
(If applying for any certificate at the General Record Office - for example - you would quote the year and quarter of the event and Darlington 10a 257)
