UK public libraries

Use the link below to find your nearest public libraries. They may hold such formation as GRO indexes of births, marriages and deaths, as well as church records of christenings, marriages and burials along with electoral registers and business directories. Some libraries now have a local studies centre catering for the family historian, with additional local information.

Finding a birth certificate may give you an address of birth. You can use this address to check which ecclesiastical district, i.e which church was in that local area. The christening may have been performed in that church. Search the records of that church and other local churches to trace siblings to your relative. Often, siblings were christened in the same church. Try searching the electoral register to find who else was living in the house.

Finding a marriage certificate may give you the addresses of both groom and bride. Try searching the electoral register for anyone else who lived in the houshold; they may be related.

Finding a death certificate may give you the persons normal residence. Search for a place of burial. This will help, as families often had a common burial plot or were buried in the same grave yard. Also search local burial registers for other possible relatives and try searching electoral registers to see who else was living at the persons residence
