Coats of Arms
Heraldry began around the 12th Century. It is thought noblemen in armour on the field of battle were hard to recognize, so it became practice to wear coats of arms (devices); infantry would then know who to follow into battle. The army of noblemen would wear these devices on their surcoats. In later time these coats of arms became hereditary and coats of arms are now granted by the College of Arms.
